Tunisia, April 2005

April 11-15, 2005, I visited the cities of Tunis and Sousse in Tunisia as a member of a University of Georgia delegation. We conducted a multi-day seminar on e-learning for faculty and administrators involved with the Virtual University of Tunisia. Here are a few photos from the trip.

After the opening session in Tunis, the president of the Virtual University hosted a lunch for the delegation in Sidi Bou Said. This is a view from our table.

Alan Flurry and Takoi Hamrita. Takoi is the director of the UGA-Tunisia Educational Partnership. Here she expresses her feelings about digital camera batteries.

The UGA delegation has a late dinner in Sousse after the van ride from Tunis. From left to right: Brad Cahoon; Tom Reeves and Janette Hill, UGA Department of Instructional Technology; Mike Rogers, University System of Georgia Advanced Learning Technologies; Takoi Hamrita.

The Tej Merhaba hotel. Sousse is a favorite destination for European tourists. Unfortunately our schedule didn't allow us much time to enjoy the beautiful locale.

The seminar was well-publicized in Tunisia, including TV, radio, and newspaper coverage.

The opening session in Sousse allowed us to share our experiences with projects such as eCore.

The event organizers arranged a visit for the delegation to the Sousse Archealogical Museum.

The museum includes a remarkable collection of mosaics from Tunisia's Roman era.

You never know when you may need a photo for your dustjacket. As always, Alan is prepared.

Janette Hill and Mike Rogers converse in the museum courtyard.

Tom Reeves imitating Samson. I'm glad to report the museum did not collapse.

Some of the older part of Sousse is visible through the window behind me.

At this taxi phone shop near the hotel, I was able to place several calls back to the United States.

In the closing session of the seminar, the participants developed action plans for the Virtual University.

The medina in Tunis. Throughout our trip, we were struck by the beauty of Tunisia, the depth of its history and culture, and the warmth of its people. As the partnership continues, I look forward to returning.
